Why Bekal Deserves a Visit
Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala — a massive circular structure perched on a headland overlooking the Arabian Sea in Kasaragod district. Built in the 17th century, the fort's observation tower offers a 360-degree panorama of the coastline, coconut groves, and the sea stretching to the horizon.
If you have seen the Bollywood film "Bombay" — the iconic beach scene was shot at Bekal. That put this quiet North Kerala destination on the map, and it has been growing steadily since.
Bekal is part of a larger tourism development — the Bekal Tourism Development Corporation has created a well-maintained fort area, beach park, and resort zone. It is one of the few places in North Kerala with proper tourism infrastructure, making it easy and comfortable to visit.
Top Places to Visit
1. Bekal Fort
Kerala's largest and best-preserved fort. The circular structure rises from the sea on three sides, with massive laterite walls, underground tunnels, and an observation tower at the top. The views from the tower are spectacular — the Arabian Sea on three sides, Bekal Beach below, and the green Kasaragod coastline stretching in both directions.
- Entry: from ₹25
- Timings: 8 AM – 5:30 PM
- Time needed: 1–1.5 hours
- Tip: Visit late afternoon for the best light and a stunning sunset from the tower
2. Bekal Beach
A long, clean beach right next to the fort. The Bekal Beach Park is well-maintained with landscaped gardens, walkways, and a sculpture garden. The beach itself is wide and uncrowded — perfect for walking, swimming (with caution), and watching the sunset with the fort silhouetted against the sky.
- Entry: from ₹20 (beach park)
- Time needed: 1–2 hours
- Best time: Evening for sunset
3. Kappil Beach & Backwater
A unique spot 5 km south of Bekal where a river meets the sea, creating a beach on one side and a calm backwater on the other — similar to Poovar near Trivandrum. Boat rides on the backwater are available. Much quieter than Bekal Beach.
- Distance from Bekal: 5 km
- Time needed: 1–1.5 hours
- Tip: The boat ride through the backwater with the beach visible on the other side is a unique experience
4. Chandragiri Fort
A smaller fort 8 km from Bekal, overlooking the Chandragiri River. Less visited than Bekal Fort but equally atmospheric. The river setting is different from Bekal's sea-facing position. Good for history enthusiasts.
- Distance from Bekal: 8 km
- Entry: from ₹10
- Time needed: 45 minutes
5. Ananthapura Lake Temple
The only lake temple in Kerala — a small temple on an island in the middle of a freshwater lake, 25 km from Bekal. Legend says this is the original seat of Ananthapadmanabha (Lord Vishnu) before the deity moved to Trivandrum. A vegetarian crocodile named "Babiya" lives in the lake and is considered the temple guardian.
- Distance from Bekal: 25 km
- Time needed: 1 hour
- Tip: The crocodile is real and often visible near the temple steps. Completely harmless — it has been vegetarian for generations according to temple tradition
6. Valiyaparamba Backwaters
One of Kerala's most scenic backwater stretches — a long island formation between the river and the sea, 40 km from Bekal. Less commercialised than Alleppey, with country boat rides through quiet canals. A hidden gem for backwater lovers.
- Distance from Bekal: 40 km
- Time needed: Half day for boat ride
