🏔️ 12 Best Places to Visit in Kodaikanal — Hill Station Guide (2025)

Why Kodaikanal is Called the Princess of Hill Stations

Kodaikanal sits at 2,133 metres in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu — a romantic hill station built around a star-shaped lake, surrounded by dense shola forests, waterfalls, and granite cliffs. While Ooty is the "Queen," Kodaikanal is the "Princess" — smaller, quieter, and more intimate.

Unlike Ooty which can feel crowded and commercialised, Kodaikanal retains a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. The mist rolling through pine forests, the star-shaped lake reflecting the sky, and the dramatic cliff viewpoints make it one of South India's most romantic destinations.

Kodaikanal is especially popular with honeymooners, couples, and families from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. From Madurai it is just 3 hours, from Kochi about 6 hours, making it an easy add-on to any South India trip.

Must-Visit Places

1. Kodaikanal Lake (Kodai Lake)

The heart of Kodaikanal — a man-made, star-shaped lake surrounded by dense forest and walking paths. Boating is the main activity — pedal boats, row boats, and shikaras glide across the calm water. The 5 km path around the lake is perfect for a morning walk or evening stroll.

  • Location: Town centre
  • Boating: Pedal boat from ₹150, row boat from ₹200, shikara from ₹300
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours
  • Tip: Early morning (6–7 AM) the lake is misty and magical. Evening boating catches the sunset

2. Coaker's Walk

A 1 km paved path along the edge of a steep cliff, offering panoramic views of the plains 2,000 metres below. On clear days you can see all the way to Madurai. The walk is easy and flat — suitable for all ages. Named after Lt. Coaker who built it in 1872.

  • Location: 1 km from lake
  • Entry: from ₹30
  • Timings: 7 AM – 7 PM
  • Time needed: 30–45 minutes
  • Tip: Visit early morning for clear views. By afternoon, clouds often roll in and obscure the valley

3. Pillar Rocks

Three massive granite pillars rising 122 metres from a deep valley, surrounded by dense forest. One of Kodaikanal's most dramatic viewpoints. The rocks disappear into mist on cloudy days, creating an eerie atmosphere.

  • Distance from town: 8 km
  • Entry: from ₹20
  • Time needed: 30–45 minutes
  • Tip: Best viewed in morning light. A small garden near the viewpoint is pleasant for a short walk

4. Bryant Park

A beautifully maintained botanical garden next to Kodai Lake, with over 325 species of plants, a greenhouse with exotic flowers, and landscaped lawns. The annual flower show (May) is a major attraction. Peaceful and well-kept — a good spot to relax.

  • Location: Adjacent to Kodai Lake
  • Entry: from ₹30
  • Timings: 8:30 AM – 6:30 PM
  • Time needed: 1 hour

5. Pine Forest

Tall pine trees planted in neat rows with a carpet of dried needles on the ground — sunlight filtering through the canopy creates a magical atmosphere. Very similar to Vagamon's pine forest in Kerala. Popular for photography and quiet walks.

  • Distance from town: 5 km
  • Entry: from ₹20
  • Time needed: 45 minutes

Viewpoints

6. Dolphin's Nose

A flat rock jutting out over a cliff with a 2,000-metre drop below. The shape resembles a dolphin's nose. The viewpoint offers stunning views of the valley and, on clear days, the Palani plains. A short trek (1 km) from the road leads to the viewpoint.

  • Distance from town: 8 km
  • Trek: 1 km from parking (easy)
  • Time needed: 1.5 hours including trek
  • Tip: Combine with Pillar Rocks — they are on the same road

7. Green Valley View (Suicide Point)

Despite the grim name, this is simply a dramatic cliff viewpoint overlooking a vast green valley. The sheer drop and the endless valley below are vertigo-inducing. One of the most photographed spots in Kodaikanal.

  • Distance from town: 5 km
  • Entry: from ₹20
  • Time needed: 30 minutes

8. Moir Point

A quiet viewpoint overlooking the Vaigai Dam reservoir far below. Less crowded than Green Valley View and equally scenic. The drive to Moir Point passes through eucalyptus forests.

  • Distance from town: 10 km
  • Time needed: 30 minutes

Waterfalls & Nature

9. Bear Shola Falls

A seasonal waterfall in a forested valley, 2 km from the lake. Best visited during and after monsoon (June–October) when the flow is strong. The short walk through the forest to reach the falls is pleasant. Named because bears were once spotted here.

  • Distance from town: 2 km
  • Entry: from ₹10
  • Time needed: 30–45 minutes
  • Best season: June–October

10. Silver Cascade Falls

A 55-metre waterfall on the Madurai–Kodaikanal ghat road, visible right from the highway. Most visitors stop here on the way up or down. The cascade is thin but scenic, especially after rain.

  • Location: On the ghat road, 8 km before Kodaikanal
  • Entry: Free (roadside)
  • Time needed: 15 minutes

11. Berijam Lake

A pristine lake 21 km from Kodaikanal, inside a restricted forest area. Requires a forest department permit (limited daily passes). The drive through dense shola forest is as beautiful as the lake itself. One of the most untouched spots near Kodaikanal.

  • Distance from town: 21 km
  • Permit: Required from Forest Office (apply morning, limited slots)
  • Time needed: Half day
  • Tip: Apply for permit early morning at the Forest Office near the lake. Weekdays have better availability

12. Kurinji Andavar Temple

A small temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, famous for the Kurinji flower that blooms once every 12 years (next bloom: 2030). Even without the bloom, the temple's hilltop location offers good views. The surrounding area has pleasant walking trails.

  • Distance from town: 4 km
  • Time needed: 30 minutes
