🏰 13 Best Places to Visit in Mysore — Palace, Gardens & Day Trips (2025)

Why Mysore is South India's Cultural Capital

Mysore (Mysuru) is one of India's most elegant cities — a place where royal heritage, grand architecture, vibrant markets, and manicured gardens come together. The city was the seat of the Wodeyar dynasty for over 500 years, and that royal legacy is visible everywhere — from the illuminated palace to the tree-lined boulevards.

For Kerala travellers, Mysore is an easy cross-border trip. From Wayanad it is just 3 hours, from Calicut about 5 hours, and from Kannur about 5.5 hours. Many travellers combine Wayanad + Mysore + Ooty in a single hill-and-heritage circuit.

Must-Visit Places

1. Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace)

The crown jewel of Mysore — one of the most visited monuments in India after the Taj Mahal. This Indo-Saracenic masterpiece was built in 1912 and features carved rosewood doors, stained glass ceilings, mosaic floors, and the famous golden howdah (elephant throne) weighing 750 kg.

On Sundays and public holidays (7–8 PM), the palace is illuminated with 97,000 light bulbs — a sight that draws thousands of visitors.

  • Location: City centre
  • Entry: from ₹70 (Indian), ₹200 (foreigner)
  • Timings: 10 AM – 5:30 PM daily
  • Illumination: Sundays and public holidays, 7–8 PM
  • Time needed: 1.5–2 hours
  • Tip: Visit the palace during the day for interiors, then return Sunday evening for the illumination. No photography inside

2. Chamundi Hills

A hilltop temple dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, the patron deity of Mysore. The drive up (13 km) offers panoramic views of the city below. On the way, stop at the massive Nandi Bull statue — a 4.9-metre monolithic bull carved from a single rock in 1659.

  • Distance from city: 13 km (hilltop)
  • Entry: Free (temple)
  • Time needed: 1.5 hours (including drive and temple)
  • Tip: Visit early morning for clear city views and shorter temple queues. The 1,000-step climb is an alternative to driving

3. Brindavan Gardens

A terraced garden below the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam, famous for its symmetrical layout, musical fountain, and illuminated evening show. The gardens are spread across 60 acres with flower beds, topiary, and water channels.

  • Distance from city: 21 km
  • Entry: from ₹30
  • Musical fountain: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM (weekdays), 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM (weekends)
  • Time needed: 2 hours (evening visit recommended for fountain show)
  • Tip: Go in the evening for the musical fountain — it is the highlight. Weekends are crowded

4. Mysore Zoo (Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens)

One of the oldest and best-maintained zoos in India, established in 1892. Home to a wide variety of animals including white tigers, gorillas, giraffes, elephants, and a large collection of birds. The zoo is set in beautiful gardens with mature trees.

  • Location: City centre (near palace)
  • Entry: from ₹60
  • Timings: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM (closed Tuesdays)
  • Time needed: 2–3 hours
  • Tip: Go early morning when animals are most active. Avoid weekends if possible — very crowded

5. Devaraja Market

A 130-year-old market stretching over 2 km — one of the most vibrant and colourful markets in South India. Piles of kumkum powder in every shade of red, jasmine garlands, fresh produce, spices, sandalwood products, and Mysore silk. The sensory overload is incredible.

  • Location: Dhanvanthri Road, city centre
  • Best time: Morning (7–10 AM) for the freshest flowers and produce
  • Time needed: 1 hour
  • Tip: Buy Mysore sandalwood soap, agarbatti (incense), and silk here — much cheaper than tourist shops

Heritage & Culture

6. Srirangapatna

A river island 16 km from Mysore — the former capital of Tipu Sultan. Visit Tipu's Summer Palace (Daria Daulat Bagh) with its stunning murals, the Gumbaz (Tipu's mausoleum), and the Ranganathaswamy Temple. The island is surrounded by the Kaveri River — scenic and historically rich.

  • Distance from city: 16 km
  • Entry: from ₹15 (Summer Palace)
  • Time needed: 2–3 hours
  • Tip: Combine with Brindavan Gardens — they are on the same road (KRS Road)

7. St. Philomena's Cathedral

One of the tallest churches in Asia — a stunning Neo-Gothic cathedral built in 1936, inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. The twin spires rise 53 metres, and the stained glass windows depicting the life of Christ are beautiful.

  • Location: City centre
  • Entry: Free
  • Time needed: 30 minutes

8. Jaganmohan Palace & Art Gallery

A 19th-century palace converted into an art gallery. Houses a collection of royal paintings, musical instruments, and rare artefacts including works by Raja Ravi Varma. The palace architecture itself is worth seeing.

  • Location: City centre (near Mysore Palace)
  • Entry: from ₹20
  • Timings: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Time needed: 45 minutes

Nature & Surroundings

9. Karanji Lake

A scenic lake with a butterfly park, walk-through aviary, and nature trail. Located right behind the Mysore Zoo. The lake attracts migratory birds during winter (November–February). A peaceful escape from the city bustle.

  • Location: Behind Mysore Zoo
  • Entry: from ₹20
  • Time needed: 1 hour

10. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

A cluster of small islands in the Kaveri River, 18 km from Mysore. Boat rides take you past nesting colonies of painted storks, cormorants, spoonbills, and egrets. Crocodiles bask on the riverbanks. One of the best birdwatching spots in Karnataka.

  • Distance from city: 18 km (near Srirangapatna)
  • Entry: from ₹50
  • Boating: from ₹50
  • Time needed: 1.5 hours
  • Best season: June–November (nesting season)

11. GRS Fantasy Park / Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum

For families with kids — GRS Fantasy Park has water rides and amusement activities. The Sand Sculpture Museum nearby has impressive sand art. Good for a half-day family outing.

  • Distance from city: 10 km
  • Time needed: 2–3 hours

12. Mysore Dasara Exhibition Grounds

During the famous Mysore Dasara festival (September–October), this area comes alive with exhibitions, food stalls, cultural performances, and the grand Dasara procession. Even outside festival season, the grounds host events and fairs.

  • Dasara festival: September–October (10 days)
  • Tip: If you can time your visit during Dasara, do it. The Jamboo Savari (elephant procession) on Vijayadashami is one of India's grandest spectacles

13. Golden Temple, Bylakuppe (Day Trip)

The Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe is the largest Tibetan Buddhist settlement in South India — and the Golden Temple inside is breathtaking. Three massive gold-plated Buddha statues sit inside a hall covered in vibrant Tibetan murals. The monastery complex includes prayer halls, a university, and monks in maroon robes going about their daily life. It feels like stepping into Tibet.
