About Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Padmanabhaswamy Temple Trivandrum

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most sacred and historically significant temples in India. Located in the heart of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), this ancient Vishnu temple is the city's spiritual and cultural landmark — in fact, the city gets its name from "Thiru Anantha Puram," meaning the abode of Lord Anantha (the serpent on which Lord Vishnu reclines).

The temple made global headlines in 2011 when its underground vaults were found to contain treasures worth over ₹1 lakh crore — making it the richest temple in the world. But for devotees and visitors, the real treasure is the centuries-old Dravidian architecture, the powerful deity, and the deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Darshan Timings

  • Morning: 3:30 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Evening: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Best time for darshan: Early morning (3:30–6:00 AM) for shorter queues, or evening (5:00–6:30 PM)
  • Special darshan days: Ekadashi, Ashtami, and festival days (expect longer queues)
  • Closed: Between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM

The temple follows strict timings. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your preferred darshan slot.

Dress Code (Strictly Enforced)

Padmanabhaswamy Temple has one of the strictest dress codes among Indian temples:

  • Men: Must wear mundu (dhoti) without shirt. No pants, jeans, shorts, or shirts allowed inside
  • Women: Must wear saree, set-mundu, or long skirt with blouse. No churidar, salwar kameez, jeans, or western wear
  • Children: Boys in mundu, girls in long skirt or pavada

Dress rental is available near the temple entrance (around ₹50–100). If you're a tourist unfamiliar with the dress code, don't worry — the shops right outside the east gate rent mundus and set-mundus.

How to Reach

The temple is located at East Fort, the centre of Trivandrum city:

  • From Trivandrum Airport (TRV): 6 km, 20–30 minutes by cab
  • From Trivandrum Railway Station: 1 km, 5 minutes walk
  • From Kovalam Beach: 16 km, 30–40 minutes by cab
  • From Kochi: 210 km, 4 hours via NH 66. Book a Kochi to Trivandrum cab

Parking is limited near the temple. We recommend getting dropped by cab and having the driver wait or pick you up after darshan.

History & Architecture

The temple's origins date back over 1,000 years, though the current structure in the Dravidian style was built in the 16th century. Key highlights:

  • Gopuram (tower): The 7-storey gopuram at the eastern entrance is an iconic Trivandrum landmark, covered in intricate stone carvings
  • Ottakkal Mandapam: A corridor made from a single massive granite stone — an engineering marvel
  • Reclining Vishnu: The main deity is Lord Vishnu in the Anantha Shayana posture (reclining on the serpent Anantha). The idol is so large that it can only be viewed through three doors simultaneously
  • Vaults: Six underground vaults (A through F) contain centuries of accumulated temple wealth. Vault B remains unopened by court order
