You start at sea level in Kerala's capital city and end up at 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats, surrounded by tea plantations, cool mountain air and misty peaks. It is roughly 310 km and takes about 7–8 hours by car, but the journey itself is half the experience.

If you are planning this trip, this guide covers everything — the best route to take, places worth stopping at along the way, what to do once you reach Munnar, the ideal time of year to visit, and practical tips that will make your journey smoother.

Route Overview

The most popular route from Trivandrum to Munnar follows NH 66 northward to Kochi and then turns east on NH 85 through the ghats. This is the route most experienced drivers prefer because the highway sections are well-maintained and the ghat road from Neriamangalam to Munnar, while winding, is a familiar and well-serviced stretch.

  • Distance: ~310 km
  • Drive time: 7–8 hours (including breaks)
  • Highway: NH 66 (Trivandrum to Kochi) + NH 85 (Kochi to Munnar)

An alternate route goes via Kottayam and Kumily, passing through Thekkady before reaching Munnar. This adds about an hour but lets you see Kerala's spice country and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary area. It is a good option if you want to break the trip into two days with a night in Thekkady.

For the fastest and most comfortable experience, book a Trivandrum to Munnar cab with an experienced hill driver who knows every turn on the ghat roads.

Places to Stop Along the Way

Kollam (2 hours from Trivandrum)

The first major town on NH 66. Kollam sits on the edge of Ashtamudi Lake, one of Kerala's largest and most scenic backwater lakes. It is a good spot for a quick tea break. If you are starting very early, the bakeries here open by 6 AM and serve fresh Kerala snacks.

Alappuzha / Alleppey (3 hours from Trivandrum)

You will pass through the outskirts of Alleppey, Kerala's backwater capital. If you have time, a short detour to the Alleppey beach or the canal-side roads gives you a taste of the famous backwater landscape. Many travellers combine a Munnar trip with a houseboat stay in Alleppey on the return leg.

Kochi (4 hours from Trivandrum)

The halfway point and a natural lunch stop. Kochi has excellent restaurants along NH 66 and near Ernakulam. From here, the route turns east toward the hills. If you are arriving from Trivandrum Airport early in the morning, you will reach Kochi by mid-morning — perfect timing for a meal before the ghat climb.

Neriamangalam (5.5 hours from Trivandrum)

This small town marks the beginning of the ghat section. The road starts climbing here, and the landscape changes dramatically — flat paddy fields give way to dense tropical forest. The Neriamangalam bridge over the Periyar River is a scenic landmark.

Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls (6 hours from Trivandrum)

Two stunning waterfalls right beside the road in the ghat section. Cheeyappara is a multi-tiered cascade that is visible from the highway itself. Valara is slightly more secluded. Both are worth a 10–15 minute photo stop, especially if you are travelling during or just after the monsoon when they are at full force.

Adimali (6.5 hours from Trivandrum)

The gateway to Munnar. You will notice the temperature dropping noticeably here and the first tea gardens appearing on the hillsides. A good spot for a chai break at one of the small tea stalls that line the road.

What to Do in Munnar

Munnar is compact enough that you can cover the main attractions in two full days. Here are the highlights:

  • Eravikulam National Park — Home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The shola grasslands at the top offer panoramic views. Open September to March (closed during monsoon for breeding season).
  • Top Station — The highest point in Munnar at 1,880 metres. On clear days you can see across to the Tamil Nadu plains. Best visited early morning before the clouds roll in.
  • Mattupetty Dam — A reservoir surrounded by tea estates and forest. Boating is available. The drive from Munnar town to Mattupetty is scenic in itself.
  • Echo Point — A lake surrounded by hills where sound echoes clearly across the valley. Popular with families.
  • Tea Museum — Run by Tata Tea, this small museum explains Munnar's 150-year tea heritage. Includes a tasting session.
  • Kundala Lake — Pedal boating on a lake surrounded by tea plantations and eucalyptus trees. Quieter than the more popular spots.

Best Time to Visit Munnar

September to March is the ideal window. The monsoon ends by September, the air is clean, skies are clear and temperatures are pleasant (10–25°C). December and January are the coldest months — expect single-digit temperatures at night.

April and May are warm but still comfortable compared to the plains. This is peak domestic tourist season, so expect crowds at popular viewpoints.

June to August is monsoon season. The hills are at their greenest and most dramatic, but heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures on the ghat section. Eravikulam National Park closes during this period. If you do travel in monsoon, make sure your driver is experienced with wet ghat roads.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Start early. Leaving Trivandrum by 5–6 AM means you reach Munnar by early afternoon, with plenty of daylight left for the ghat section.
  • Carry warm clothes. Munnar gets genuinely cold, especially at night. A light jacket is essential even in summer.
  • Book a cab, do not self-drive. The ghat roads have hairpin bends, steep drops and occasional fog. Local drivers who travel this route regularly handle these conditions far better than first-time visitors. Our Trivandrum to Munnar cab service pairs you with hill-driving experts.
  • Motion sickness. The 40+ km ghat section is winding. If you or anyone in your group is prone to car sickness, carry medication and avoid heavy meals before the climb.
  • Fuel up before the ghats. The last reliable fuel station before Munnar is at Adimali. Make sure your vehicle has enough fuel.
  • Cash is useful. Many small shops, entry counters and tea stalls in Munnar do not accept cards. Carry some cash.

Extending Your Trip

Munnar pairs well with other Kerala destinations for a multi-day tour:

  • Munnar + Thekkady — Drive from Munnar to Thekkady (3.5 hours) for wildlife and spice plantations, then return to Trivandrum or Kochi.
  • Munnar + Alleppey — Head from Munnar to Alleppey (5 hours) for a houseboat cruise, then back to Trivandrum.
  • Munnar + Kochi — The Kochi to Munnar route is just 4–5 hours, making it easy to fly into Cochin Airport and head straight to the hills.
