Why Vagamon is Kerala's Best-Kept Secret
While Munnar gets the crowds and Wayanad gets the trekkers, Vagamon quietly offers something neither can — absolute peace. This small hill station at 1,100 metres in Idukki district is a landscape of rolling meadows, pine forests, and misty valleys that feels more like Scotland than Kerala.

Vagamon has no traffic jams, no tourist buses, and no crowded viewpoints. It is where Keralites go when they want to escape — a weekend retreat from Kochi (3.5 hours) or Kottayam (2 hours) that feels like a different world.
In recent years, Vagamon has become a hotspot for paragliding and adventure sports, attracting a younger crowd alongside the families and couples who have always loved it.
Top Places to Visit
1. Vagamon Meadows (Thangal Para)
Vast green meadows stretching across hilltops — the signature Vagamon landscape. The grass is impossibly green, the sky feels close enough to touch, and the silence is broken only by wind. Perfect for walking, sitting, and doing absolutely nothing.
- Location: Central Vagamon
- Entry: Free
- Time needed: 1–2 hours
- Tip: Visit early morning for mist rolling across the meadows. Bring a jacket — it is windy
2. Pine Forest
A dense plantation of tall pine trees with a carpet of dried needles on the ground. Sunlight filters through the canopy creating a magical atmosphere. One of the most photographed spots in Vagamon — and one of the most peaceful walks you will take in Kerala.
- Location: 3 km from Vagamon town
- Entry: from ₹20
- Time needed: 45 minutes – 1 hour
- Tip: Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photography
3. Paragliding
Vagamon is one of the best paragliding spots in South India. Tandem flights take you off the hilltop and over the valleys — 10–15 minutes of soaring with stunning views of tea estates, meadows, and the Western Ghats. No experience needed.
- Duration: 10–15 minutes flight
- Best season: September–May (wind conditions)
- Tip: Book on the spot at the paragliding centre near the meadows. Morning flights have calmer winds
4. Kurisumala (Cross Hill)
A hill with 14 crosses marking the Stations of the Cross, leading to a monastery at the top. The 30-minute climb offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The Kurisumala Ashram at the top is a Cistercian monastery known for its organic dairy farm.
- Distance from Vagamon: 5 km
- Trek: 30 minutes uphill (easy to moderate)
- Time needed: 1.5 hours
5. Marmala Waterfalls
The largest waterfall in the Vagamon area — a 200-ft cascade through dense forest. Requires a 2 km trek through the woods. The pool at the base is refreshing. Best visited during or just after monsoon when the flow is strongest.
- Distance from Vagamon: 12 km
- Trek: 2 km (moderate, forest trail)
- Time needed: 2–3 hours
- Best season: June–December
6. Vagamon Lake
A small, serene lake surrounded by hills and pine trees. Pedal boating available. Quiet and uncrowded — a good spot for couples wanting some peace.
- Location: 2 km from town
- Boating: from ₹100
- Time needed: 45 minutes
7. Mooppanpara (Suicide Point)
Despite the grim name, this is simply a dramatic cliff viewpoint overlooking a deep valley. The view is vertigo-inducing — a sheer drop with the valley floor hundreds of metres below. On clear days, you can see all the way to the plains.
- Distance from Vagamon: 8 km
- Entry: from ₹20
- Time needed: 30 minutes
- Tip: Not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Railings are minimal
8. Tea Plantations
Vagamon is surrounded by tea estates — not as vast as Munnar's but equally beautiful and far less crowded. Walking through the tea gardens with mist drifting through is a quintessential Vagamon experience.
- Where: Along the roads around Vagamon. No specific entry point needed
- Cost: Free
