Why Kerala Shopping is Special
Kerala produces things you cannot find anywhere else in India — or the world. The state sits on the ancient Spice Route that attracted traders from Rome, China, and Arabia for over 2,000 years. Those same spices, along with tea, coconut products, Ayurvedic medicines, and traditional handicrafts, make Kerala shopping unique and rewarding.
The best part? Most of these items are cheapest when bought at the source — spices from Thekkady plantations, tea from Munnar factories, cashews from Kollam, and Ayurvedic products from Kerala pharmacies. Your cab driver will know exactly where to stop for the best quality at local prices (not tourist-trap prices).
Here are 15 things every tourist should buy in Kerala, where to find them, and how to avoid overpaying.
Spices (The #1 Kerala Purchase)
1. Cardamom (Elaichi)
Kerala produces 60% of India's cardamom. The green cardamom from Thekkady and Munnar is the most aromatic in the world. Buy it whole (not powdered) for maximum freshness. The smell alone is worth it.
- Where to buy: Spice plantations in Thekkady (Kumily town), Munnar spice shops
- Price: Much cheaper than city shops. Plantation prices are 40–50% less than supermarket rates
- Tip: Ask your driver to take you to a plantation shop, not the roadside tourist stalls. Plantation shops sell directly without middlemen
2. Black Pepper (Kali Mirch)
Kerala pepper was once called "black gold" — it's what brought European traders to India. Thekkady and Wayanad produce the best quality. Buy whole peppercorns — they stay fresh for years.
- Where to buy: Thekkady spice shops, Wayanad plantations
- Tip: Tellicherry pepper (from Kannur/Thalassery area) is considered the world's finest. Ask specifically for it
3. Vanilla
Real vanilla pods are expensive everywhere — but in Kerala they cost a fraction of international prices. Thekkady plantations grow vanilla alongside cardamom and pepper.
- Where to buy: Thekkady plantations
- Tip: Real vanilla pods should be dark brown, flexible, and intensely fragrant. Avoid dry, brittle ones
4. Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg
The full spice collection. All grown in Kerala's Western Ghats. Buy them whole and grind at home for the freshest flavour.
- Where to buy: Thekkady, Wayanad, any spice plantation tour
- Tip: Do a spice plantation tour first — you'll learn to identify quality. Then buy at the plantation shop
Tea & Coffee
5. Munnar Tea
Munnar's tea plantations produce some of India's finest tea. The Tea Museum and factory shops sell varieties you won't find in regular stores — silver tips, golden tips, white tea, green tea, and flavoured varieties.
- Where to buy: Munnar Tea Museum shop, KDHP outlets, roadside tea factories between Adimali and Munnar
- Price: Factory prices are 30–50% cheaper than branded packaged tea
- Tip: Buy directly from the Tea Museum or factory outlets. The "tea shops" in Munnar town are often resellers at higher prices. Your driver will know the best factory shops
6. Wayanad Coffee
Wayanad is Kerala's coffee country. Robusta and Arabica beans grown in the shade of pepper vines and cardamom plants. Buy whole beans or freshly ground.
- Where to buy: Wayanad coffee estates, Kalpetta town shops
- Tip: Ask for "plantation fresh" — roasted within the last week. The aroma is incomparable to store-bought coffee
Food & Snacks
7. Banana Chips (Kerala's Signature Snack)
Thin-sliced banana fried in coconut oil — Kerala's most famous snack. Available everywhere but quality varies hugely. The best are made from nendran bananas, fried in pure coconut oil, with just the right amount of salt.
- Where to buy: Everywhere in Kerala. Best from local shops in Alleppey, Kottayam, and Kollam. Airport shops are overpriced
- Tip: Buy from shops where you can see them being made fresh. Avoid packaged brands — they use palm oil instead of coconut oil
8. Cashew Nuts
Kollam district is India's cashew capital. Kerala cashews are larger, whiter, and tastier than most. Available roasted, salted, masala-flavoured, or plain.
- Where to buy: Kollam town, any Kerala supermarket, Lulu Hypermarket
- Tip: Buy "W180" or "W210" grade for the largest, premium cashews. Cheaper grades are smaller but still good
9. Kerala Halwa
A dense, chewy sweet made from rice flour, coconut milk, and jaggery. Kozhikode (Calicut) halwa is the most famous — especially from the legendary sweet shops on SM Street.
- Where to buy: Calicut SM Street (Mittai Theruvu), any Kerala sweet shop
- Varieties: Plain, coconut, cashew, ghee, dates
Ayurveda & Wellness
10. Ayurvedic Oils & Medicines
Kerala is the Ayurveda capital of India. Authentic Ayurvedic products — hair oils, body oils, pain balms, herbal supplements — are available at genuine pharmacies across the state. Brands like Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, AVP, and Dhathri are trusted names.
- Where to buy: Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala outlets (branches in every city), AVP pharmacies, Dhathri stores
- What to buy: Neelibhringadi hair oil, Dhanwantharam oil, Murivenna (pain oil), herbal face packs
- Tip: Buy from branded Ayurvedic pharmacies, not random tourist shops. The pharmacies guarantee authenticity
11. Virgin Coconut Oil
Kerala's coconut oil is cold-pressed and pure — very different from the refined coconut oil sold elsewhere. Used for cooking, hair, skin, and Ayurvedic treatments.
- Where to buy: Any Kerala supermarket, Lulu Hypermarket, local oil mills
- Tip: Look for "cold-pressed" or "virgin" on the label. Avoid "refined" — it's processed and loses the coconut flavour
Traditional & Handicrafts
12. Kasavu Saree / Mundu
The iconic Kerala traditional wear — cream/white fabric with a gold border (kasavu). Kasavu sarees for women and mundu-veshti sets for men are perfect gifts that represent Kerala culture.
- Where to buy: Kuthampully (near Thrissur) is the weaving village. Also available at Jayalakshmi, Seematti, and other textile shops in any Kerala city
- Price: Handloom Kasavu starts from ₹1,500. Machine-made from ₹500
- Tip: Handloom is more expensive but lasts decades. Check for the handloom mark
13. Coir Products
Coir (coconut fibre) is a Kerala specialty — mats, rugs, bags, wall hangings, and decorative items. Alleppey is the coir capital of India.
- Where to buy: Alleppey coir shops, Coir Board showrooms, Kerala handicraft emporiums
- What to buy: Door mats, yoga mats, decorative wall pieces, bags
14. Kathakali Masks & Aranmula Kannadi
Kathakali face masks (painted wooden masks of the traditional dance form) make stunning wall decorations. Aranmula Kannadi is a unique metal mirror made only in Aranmula village — a rare Kerala craft with no equivalent anywhere in the world.
- Where to buy: Kerala State Handicrafts Emporium (Trivandrum, Kochi), Fort Kochi antique shops, Aranmula village (for the mirror)
- Tip: Aranmula Kannadi is expensive (₹2,000+) but it's a one-of-a-kind item. No other place in the world makes metal mirrors this way
15. Nettipattam (Elephant Caparison)
The decorative golden headpiece worn by elephants during Kerala temple festivals. Miniature versions make beautiful wall hangings and gifts. Uniquely Kerala.
- Where to buy: Handicraft shops in Thrissur, Kochi, Trivandrum
- Price: Miniature decorative pieces from ₹500
Where NOT to Buy (Tourist Traps)
- Roadside stalls on ghat roads — Overpriced, often stale spices mixed with fillers
- Shops that tour buses stop at — Commission-based. Prices are 2–3x higher
- Airport shops — Convenient but 50–100% markup on everything
- "Spice markets" that guides take you to — Often kickback arrangements
Where TO buy:
- Spice plantation shops (after a tour)
- Tea factory outlets (on the Munnar road)
- Branded Ayurvedic pharmacies (Kottakkal, AVP)
- Local supermarkets and Lulu Hypermarket
- Kerala State Handicrafts Emporium
How Your Cab Driver Helps
This is one of the biggest advantages of having a local driver for your Kerala trip:
- Knows the genuine shops — Not the tourist-trap commission shops
- Stops at factory outlets — Tea factories, spice plantations, cashew shops on the route
- Carries your shopping — No lugging bags through bus stations. Everything stays in the car
- Suggests timing — Some shops are best visited at specific times (fresh banana chips in the morning, tea factories during processing hours)
- Negotiates if needed — Local drivers can get you better prices at some shops
Many of our customers tell us the shopping stops their driver suggested were highlights of the trip — finding authentic products at real prices instead of tourist markups.

Tips for Shopping in Kerala
- Buy spices at plantations — Always cheaper and fresher than city shops
- Carry cash for small shops — Many plantation shops and local stores don't accept cards

- Smell before buying — Fresh spices have strong aroma. Stale ones smell faint
- Pack spices in checked luggage — Strong spice smell can be an issue in cabin bags
