Kerala's Most Spectacular Waterfall
Athirapally Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala — a thundering 80-ft cascade of the Chalakudy River plunging over a wide rocky ledge into a gorge surrounded by dense tropical forest. Often called the "Niagara of India", it's been featured in several Bollywood and South Indian films, including the climax scene of Bahubali.
Located in Thrissur district at the entrance to the Sholayar forest range, Athirapally is one of the most visited natural attractions in Kerala — and for good reason. The sheer power of the falls during monsoon, the misty spray that drenches you from 100 metres away, and the pristine forest setting make it unforgettable.
Visiting the Falls
Athirapally Falls (Main)
The main waterfall has two viewpoints:
- Top viewpoint: Easy walk from the entrance. See the river approach the edge and plunge down. Railing-protected viewing area
- Bottom viewpoint: A 15-minute trek down stone steps through the forest to the base of the falls. This is where you feel the full power — the spray, the roar, the mist. Much more impressive than the top view
Practical info:
- Entry fee: from ₹40 (adults), ₹15 (children), ₹20 (camera)
- Timings: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Time needed: 1.5–2 hours
- Tip: The bottom trek has uneven steps. Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops
Vazhachal Falls
Just 5 km upstream from Athirapally, Vazhachal is a series of smaller cascades along the same river. Less dramatic than Athirapally but more accessible — the falls are right next to the road. A good 20-minute stop on the way to or from Athirapally.
- Entry: Free (roadside viewing)
- Tip: The stretch between Vazhachal and Athirapally is a beautiful forest drive
Best Time to Visit
- June–September (Monsoon): The falls at their most powerful. Massive water volume, deafening roar, mist everywhere. The forest is lush green. This is the best time — but be prepared to get drenched
- October–January: Good flow, pleasant weather, less rain. Best balance of waterfall and comfort
- February–May: Water flow reduces significantly. Summer heat. The falls are less impressive but still worth visiting

Tips

- Weekday visit: Weekends and holidays are extremely crowded. Weekday mornings are peaceful

- Leeches in monsoon: Carry salt or leech socks if trekking to the bottom during rainy season
- Food: Small restaurants near the entrance. Nothing fancy — eat before or after
