Kerala on a Budget — It is Absolutely Possible
Kerala has a reputation for being expensive — luxury houseboats, premium resorts, and tour packages that cost a fortune. But here is the truth: you can have an incredible Kerala experience on a tight budget if you know where to save and where to spend.
The key is making smart choices — travel off-season, eat local, choose homestays over resorts, pick a sedan over an SUV, and skip the overpriced tourist traps. This guide shows you exactly how.
Budget Breakdown (Per Person, 5 Days)
Here is a realistic budget for a 5-day Kerala trip:
- Cab (shared among 2–4 people): WhatsApp us for group rate — sedan is the most affordable option
- Accommodation (4 nights): ₹800–1,500 per night (homestays and budget hotels) = ₹3,200–6,000
- Houseboat (1 night, standard): Split among group — WhatsApp us for current rates
- Food: ₹400–600 per day = ₹2,000–3,000
- Entry fees and activities: ₹500–1,000 total
- Rough total per person: ₹10,000–15,000 (excluding cab, which depends on group size)
The more people sharing the cab, the cheaper it gets per person. A group of 4 in a sedan is the sweet spot for budget travel.
10 Ways to Save Money in Kerala
1. Travel Off-Season (April–May or June–September)
Peak season (October–January) means peak prices. Hotels charge 2–3x more during Christmas and New Year. Travel in April–May (hot but Munnar is still pleasant) or monsoon (June–September) for 30–50% lower rates on everything — hotels, houseboats, and even some activities.
2. Choose Homestays Over Hotels
Kerala has an incredible homestay culture. Family-run homes where you get a clean room, home-cooked Kerala meals, and genuine local hospitality — often for ₹800–1,200 per night including breakfast. Much cheaper and more authentic than hotels.
3. Eat at Local Restaurants
A full Kerala meals (rice, sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, payasam) at a local restaurant costs ₹80–150. The same meal at a tourist restaurant costs ₹300–500. The local version is usually better too. Look for restaurants where locals eat — that is your quality indicator.
4. Book a Sedan, Not an SUV
A Swift Dzire is perfectly comfortable for 2–3 passengers and costs significantly less than an Innova Crysta. The only time you need an SUV is if you have 4+ passengers with heavy luggage.
5. One-Way Cab, Not Round Trip
If you are flying in and out of the same airport, a one-way cab circuit (Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kochi) is cheaper than booking round trips from a base city.
6. Standard Houseboat, Not Premium
Standard houseboats have the same backwater experience — same canals, same sunset, same onboard meals. The difference is AC quality and room size. For one night, standard is perfectly fine. The real experience is on the upper deck, not in the bedroom.
7. Skip Overpriced Activities
Some activities are worth the money (Periyar boating, spice tour). Others are tourist traps (overpriced elephant rides, "authentic" cooking classes at ₹2,000). Ask your cab driver — they know which activities are genuine and which are ripoffs.
8. Carry Water and Snacks
Bottled water at tourist spots costs 2–3x the normal price. Buy a few bottles at a regular shop before heading to viewpoints. Same with snacks.
9. Free Attractions Are Often the Best
Tea garden walks in Munnar — free. Pothamedu sunset — free. Fort Kochi walking tour — free. Alleppey Beach — free. Kovalam sunset — free. Some of Kerala's best experiences cost nothing.
10. Book Direct, Not Through Aggregators
Hotels and houseboats on MakeMyTrip or Goibibo include a 15–20% commission markup. Book directly through the property or through us — we get local rates.

Budget Accommodation Tips
Munnar
- Homestays in Pothamedu, Pallivasal, and Chinnakanal areas — ₹800–1,500/night
- Avoid hotels on the main road (noisy and overpriced)
- Ask for rooms with valley view — many homestays offer this at no extra charge
Thekkady
- Homestays in Kumily town — ₹600–1,000/night
- Walking distance to spice shops and restaurants
- Some homestays include breakfast
Kochi
- Hostels in Fort Kochi — ₹400–800 for dorm, ₹1,200–1,800 for private room
- Great location for walking around the historic area
Alleppey
- Skip the hotel — your houseboat is your accommodation for the night
Budget Food Guide
Kerala's cheapest and best meals:
- Kerala meals (sadya style) — Rice with sambar, rasam, avial, thoran on banana leaf. ₹80–150 at local restaurants
- Puttu and kadala curry — Breakfast for ₹40–60
- Parotta and curry — Dinner for ₹60–100
- Dosa and chutney — ₹30–50
- Chai — ₹10–15 at roadside stalls. In Munnar, try fresh tea at tea stalls for ₹10
Where to eat: Look for restaurants with "Meals Ready" boards. These serve unlimited Kerala meals at fixed prices. The more locals you see inside, the better the food and value.
When to Go for Best Budget Deals
- Best budget months: April–May and September. Decent weather, low prices, fewer crowds
- Monsoon (June–August): Cheapest rates but heavy rain. Great if you do not mind getting wet. Read our monsoon trip guide
- Avoid: December 20 – January 5 (Christmas/New Year peak — everything is 2–3x expensive)
- Weekday travel: Hotels are cheaper on weekdays than weekends
How a Cab Still Fits a Budget Trip
A cab sounds expensive but when you do the math:
- Bus from Kochi to Munnar: ₹300/person × 4 people = ₹1,200. Plus auto from bus stand to hotel = ₹200. Total: ₹1,400
- Cab from Kochi to Munnar: Split among 4 people — often comparable, with door-to-door comfort, AC, luggage space, and no waiting
For a group of 3–4, a sedan cab is barely more expensive than buses — and infinitely more comfortable. Plus your driver handles all navigation, parking, and local knowledge.
