Why Visit Kerala During Monsoon?
Most travel guides tell you to avoid Kerala during monsoon. They are wrong — or at least, they are missing the full picture.
Kerala during the monsoon (June to September) is a completely different experience from the rest of the year. The hills turn an impossible shade of green. Waterfalls that are thin trickles in summer become thundering cascades. The air smells of wet earth and spices. Ayurveda is at its most effective. And the biggest advantage — the crowds disappear.
If you are the kind of traveller who loves dramatic landscapes, does not mind getting wet, and wants to experience Kerala at its most raw and beautiful, monsoon is actually the best time to visit.
Here is what makes it special, what to watch out for, and how to plan a monsoon Kerala trip.
What Makes Monsoon Kerala Special
Waterfalls at Full Power
Kerala's waterfalls are seasonal. During October to May, many are reduced to thin streams. But during monsoon, they transform:
- Athirapally Falls — Kerala's largest waterfall becomes a roaring wall of water. The spray drenches you from 100 metres away. This is when it truly earns the "Niagara of India" title
- Cheeyappara Falls (on the Kochi–Munnar road) — Multi-tiered cascade at full force, visible right from the highway
- Soochipara Falls (Wayanad) — 200-ft three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush forest
- Meenmutty Falls (Wayanad) — Kerala's second largest at 300 metres. Spectacular during monsoon
- Thommankuthu Falls (Idukki) — Seven-tiered waterfall accessible by a forest trek
If waterfalls are your thing, monsoon is the only time to see Kerala's falls at their true potential.
The Greenest Green You Have Ever Seen
Kerala is green year-round, but during monsoon it reaches another level. The tea gardens of Munnar glow an electric green. Wayanad's forests become dense and misty. The paddy fields of Kuttanad shimmer with water. Even the drive between cities becomes a visual experience — every hillside, every valley, every roadside is covered in fresh green.
Ayurveda Season (Karkidaka Chikitsa)
The monsoon month of Karkidakam (mid-July to mid-August) is traditionally the best time for Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala. The humidity opens the body's pores, making it more receptive to medicated oils and therapies. Panchakarma and rejuvenation treatments are most effective during this period.
Many Ayurveda centres offer special monsoon packages. If you are planning a serious Ayurveda programme, timing it with monsoon gives you the best results. Read our Kerala Ayurveda guide for details.
Kathakali and Temple Festivals
Monsoon is when many of Kerala's traditional art forms and temple festivals come alive. Kathakali performances, Theyyam rituals (in North Kerala), and temple festivals with elephant processions happen throughout the rainy season. The cultural calendar is rich during these months.
No Crowds, Better Prices
Peak tourist season in Kerala is October to January. During monsoon, tourist numbers drop significantly. This means:
- Hotels and resorts offer 30–50% discounts
- Houseboats are available at lower rates
- Popular viewpoints and attractions are uncrowded
- You get more personal attention at restaurants and centres
- Booking last-minute is actually possible
Best Places to Visit During Monsoon
Munnar — Misty Tea Gardens
Munnar in monsoon is hauntingly beautiful. The tea gardens disappear into mist, clouds drift through the valleys at eye level, and the temperature drops to 10–15°C. Eravikulam National Park closes during monsoon (breeding season), but the drives around Munnar — Mattupetty, Top Station road, Kundala — are at their scenic best.
- What works: Tea garden walks, viewpoint drives, cosy resort time, photography
- What does not: Eravikulam is closed. Some viewpoints may have zero visibility on heavy rain days
- Tip: Book a resort with a fireplace or in-room heater. Evenings get cold and damp
Wayanad — Waterfalls and Mist
Wayanad is arguably the best monsoon destination in Kerala. Every waterfall is at full force, the forests are dense and alive, and the mist rolling over Chembra Peak is dramatic. Soochipara and Meenmutty Falls are at their most spectacular.
- What works: Waterfalls, scenic drives, Pookode Lake, photography, resort stays
- What does not: Trekking trails can be slippery and leech-infested. Chembra Peak trek may be restricted. Wildlife safaris may be suspended
- Tip: Carry leech socks (available at shops in Kalpetta) if you plan any forest walks
Athirapally — Kerala's Niagara at Full Force
If you visit only one place during monsoon, make it Athirapally. The 80-ft waterfall becomes a massive curtain of water during June–August. The trek to the bottom viewpoint is wet and slippery but absolutely worth it. Vazhachal Falls nearby is also at its best.
- How to reach: 70 km from Kochi (1.5–2 hrs)
- Tip: Carry a rain jacket or poncho. You will get completely drenched at the bottom viewpoint
Alleppey Backwaters — Lush and Full
The backwaters during monsoon are at their fullest. The canals are wider, the vegetation is lush, and the rain on the water creates a meditative atmosphere. Houseboat cruises operate during monsoon, though some narrow canal routes may be restricted due to water levels.
- What works: Houseboat overnight stays, village canoe rides, photography
- What does not: Some houseboat routes may be shortened. Day cruises may be affected by heavy rain
- Tip: The houseboat's covered areas keep you dry. Rain on the roof while you eat dinner onboard is actually a beautiful experience
Kovalam and Varkala — Dramatic Seas
The beaches during monsoon have rough seas — swimming is not safe and lifeguards restrict water entry. But the dramatic waves crashing against Varkala's cliffs and Kovalam's rocks are spectacular to watch. The cliff-top cafes in Varkala stay open and the vibe is quieter and more intimate.
- What works: Watching the sea, cliff walks (careful on wet paths), Ayurveda, cafe time, photography
- What does not: Swimming, water sports, sunbathing
Monsoon Travel Tips
What to Pack
- Rain jacket or poncho — More practical than an umbrella for waterfalls and walks
- Waterproof bag — For your phone, camera, and wallet
- Quick-dry clothes — Cotton takes forever to dry in Kerala's humidity
- Leech socks — Essential for any forest walk in Wayanad, Thekkady, or Munnar. Available locally
- Sturdy shoes with grip — Not flip-flops. Wet stone steps at waterfalls are slippery
- Light warm layer — Munnar and Wayanad get cold during monsoon evenings
- Mosquito repellent — Monsoon means more mosquitoes, especially near backwaters
Driving and Roads
- Ghat roads can be tricky — Fog, wet roads, and occasional landslides on the Munnar and Wayanad ghat sections. This is exactly why you need an experienced local driver, not self-driving
- Our drivers handle monsoon daily — They know which stretches get foggy, where to slow down, and alternate routes if a section is blocked
- Allow extra time — Add 30–60 minutes to normal travel times during heavy rain
- Morning travel is better — Rain is usually heaviest in the afternoon and evening. Start drives early
What to Expect
- It does not rain 24/7 — Kerala monsoon has heavy spells followed by breaks. Many days have sunny mornings and rainy afternoons. You can plan outdoor activities for mornings
- Some attractions close — Eravikulam National Park (Munnar), some trekking trails, and water sports at beaches. Check before planning
- Leeches are real — In forest areas (Wayanad, Thekkady, Munnar outskirts), leeches come out during rain. They are harmless but unpleasant. Leech socks and salt solve the problem
- Photography is incredible — Mist, rain, waterfalls, green landscapes — monsoon Kerala is a photographer's paradise. Carry a waterproof camera bag

Is Monsoon Kerala Safe?
Yes, with common sense:
- Roads: National highways are fine. Ghat roads need experienced drivers (which we provide). Avoid travel during extremely heavy rain warnings
- Floods: Kerala experienced severe floods in 2018 and 2019. These were exceptional events. Normal monsoon does not cause flooding in tourist areas. Check weather forecasts before travel
- Health: Mosquito repellent is important. Drink bottled water. Carry basic medicines
- Landslides: Rare but possible on ghat roads during very heavy rain. Our drivers monitor conditions and take alternate routes when needed
