Why Kovalam is Kerala's Most Famous Beach

Kovalam is a coastal town just 16 km south of Trivandrum city centre. It's been Kerala's most popular beach destination since the 1930s — first attracting European travellers, then becoming a global favourite for its unique combination of three crescent beaches separated by rocky headlands, topped by a working lighthouse.
Unlike Goa's party beaches or Mumbai's crowded shores, Kovalam offers a quieter, more natural experience — clean sand, calm swimming waters, Ayurvedic massage centres on the beach, and fresh seafood restaurants overlooking the Arabian Sea.
The Three Beaches
Lighthouse Beach (Main Beach)
The most popular and lively of the three. Named after the Vizhinjam Lighthouse at the southern end. This is where most tourists spend their time — swimming, sunbathing, surfing, and eating at the beachfront restaurants. The lighthouse is open to visitors and offers panoramic views from the top.
- Best for: Swimming, surfing, sunset views, restaurants
- Crowd level: Moderate to busy
- Lifeguards: Yes
Hawah Beach (Eve's Beach)
The middle beach, separated from Lighthouse Beach by a rocky headland. Less crowded and more relaxed. Named after a topless sunbathing controversy in the 1970s that made international headlines and put Kovalam on the world map.
- Best for: Quieter beach time, photography
- Crowd level: Low to moderate
Samudra Beach (Northern Beach)
The quietest of the three. Longer stretch of sand with fewer tourists. Popular with locals and families. Several luxury resorts line this beach.
- Best for: Peaceful walks, resort stays, local experience
- Crowd level: Low
