What Makes Poovar Special
Poovar is a tiny coastal village 30 km south of Trivandrum where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea. This confluence creates a unique landscape — backwater canals on one side, a golden sand beach on the other, and a narrow strip of land separating the two. It is one of the most beautiful and least crowded spots in Kerala.
What makes Poovar truly unique are the floating cottages — resort rooms built on pontoons in the backwater, surrounded by water on all sides. You wake up to the sound of water lapping against your cottage, with mangroves and coconut palms all around. It is an experience you cannot get anywhere else in Kerala.
Things to Do in Poovar
Backwater Boat Ride
The main Poovar experience. A motorboat takes you through narrow mangrove-lined canals from the Poovar jetty to the beach. The 20-minute ride passes through a landscape that feels untouched — mangrove forests, fishing villages, and the occasional kingfisher diving into the water.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes (one way to beach)
- Best time: Morning (calmer water, better light, more birds)
Poovar Golden Beach
A pristine, almost deserted beach accessible only by boat — no road reaches here. The sand is golden, the water is clean, and on most days you will have the beach nearly to yourself. The estuary where the river meets the sea is a stunning sight.
- Access: By boat only (from Poovar jetty or resort)
- Swimming: Possible but be cautious of currents near the estuary
- Tip: Carry water and snacks — there are no shops on the beach
Floating Cottages
Several resorts in Poovar offer floating cottages — rooms built on pontoons in the backwater. You step out of your room onto a deck surrounded by water. Some cottages have glass floors so you can see the fish below. It is the most unique accommodation experience in Kerala.
- Best for: Honeymoon couples, anniversary trips, anyone wanting something different

Mangrove Forest
The backwaters around Poovar are lined with dense mangrove forests — a rare ecosystem that supports diverse birdlife. Canoe rides through the narrow mangrove channels are available. Early morning is best for birdwatching — egrets, herons, kingfishers, and cormorants.
Neyyar Dam (Nearby)
A scenic dam 30 km from Poovar, surrounded by the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Boating on the reservoir, a lion safari park, a crocodile rehabilitation centre, and a yoga ashram (Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre). Makes a good half-day combo with Poovar.
- Distance from Poovar: 30 km
- Time needed: 2–3 hours
How to Reach Poovar
- From Trivandrum city: 30 km, 45 minutes
- From Trivandrum Airport: 25 km, 40 minutes
- From Kovalam: 15 km, 25 minutes
Poovar is a short drive south of Kovalam. Most visitors combine Poovar with Kovalam — spend a day at Kovalam beach, then head to Poovar for the floating cottage experience.
Best Time to Visit
- October–March: Best season. Calm backwaters, clear skies, pleasant weather
- April–May: Hot but still good. Fewer tourists
- June–September: Monsoon. Backwaters are full and green but boat rides may be affected by rough water near the estuary
How to Plan a Poovar Visit
Day Trip from Trivandrum
- Drive to Poovar jetty (30 km, 45 min)
- Backwater boat ride to the beach (30 min)
- Spend 2–3 hours at the beach
- Boat back, drive to Trivandrum
- Total time: Half day
1 Night (Recommended)
- Afternoon: Arrive at floating cottage resort. Settle in
- Evening: Backwater canoe ride through mangroves. Sunset from your cottage deck
- Morning: Wake up on the water. Boat to the beach. Swim and relax
- Afternoon: Check out, drive to next destination
Combine Poovar With
- Trivandrum (1N) → Poovar (1N) → Kovalam (1N) — City, backwater, beach
- Kovalam (1N) → Poovar (1N) → {{link:/routes/trivandrum-to-kanyakumari|Kanyakumari}} (1N) — Beach trail south
- Poovar (1N) → {{link:/routes/trivandrum-to-alleppey|Alleppey}} houseboat (1N) — Two different backwater experiences
Poovar vs Alleppey — What is the Difference?
Both offer backwater experiences but they are very different:
- Alleppey: Large-scale houseboat cruises through wide canals and Vembanad Lake. More touristy, more boats, bigger experience
- Poovar: Intimate, quiet, floating cottages in a mangrove setting. Beach accessible only by boat. Much less crowded
If you have time for both, do both — they complement each other perfectly. If you can only pick one, Alleppey for the classic houseboat, Poovar for the unique floating cottage.
