What is Shivalaya Ottam?
Shivalaya Ottam is one of South India's most unique devotional pilgrimages. Observed during Maha Shivaratri, devotees traditionally run across a sacred route of 12 Shiva temples in a single day, starting before sunrise and finishing by afternoon, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya, Gopala Govinda" throughout the journey.
The 12 temples are clustered in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, close to the Kerala border. The journey symbolizes spiritual discipline, devotion, and inner purification — each temple visit representing a step toward divine realization.
While the traditional practice involves running barefoot between temples, today many devotees complete the Shivalaya Ottam by car — making it accessible to families, elderly devotees, and anyone who wants to experience this sacred tradition without the physical strain of running 60+ km.
This guide covers the complete car route plan starting from Trivandrum.

Complete Car Route Itinerary
4:30 AM — Depart from Trivandrum
Leave early. The drive from Trivandrum to the first temple near Marthandam takes about 1.5–2 hours via NH 66 and state highways. The roads are quiet at this hour. Your driver navigates while you prepare mentally for the day of devotion ahead.
6:15 AM — Temple 1: Thirumalai Mahadevar Temple
The journey begins here. This hilltop temple sets the tone for the day. Take 15–20 minutes for darshan, offer prayers, and begin the sacred chant. The morning air is cool and the temple is peaceful at this hour.
First Cluster: Temples 2–6 (6:45 AM – 8:45 AM)
These five temples are clustered close together — just 5–15 minutes driving between each. This is the fastest-moving section of the day.
- 6:45 AM — Temple 2: Thikkurichi Mahadevar Temple — Quick darshan, continue the flow
- 7:15 AM — Temple 3: Thirparappu Mahadeva Temple — Located near the beautiful Thirparappu waterfalls. The temple has an ancient charm
- 7:45 AM — Temple 4: Thirunandikkara Temple — An ancient cave temple with rock-cut architecture. One of the most atmospheric stops
- 8:15 AM — Temple 5: Ponmanai Mahadevar Temple — Short, focused darshan
- 8:45 AM — Temple 6: Pannippagam Mahadevar Temple — Halfway through the 12 temples
Spend 10–15 minutes at each temple. The rhythm builds — arrive, remove footwear, darshan, offer prayers, return to the car, drive to the next. The chanting continues.
9:00 AM — Breakfast Break
Stop near Thirparappu or Kulasekharam for a 30-minute breakfast. You'll need the energy for the second half.
- Idli with sambar and chutney — Light and easy to digest
- Dosa — Crispy and filling
- Pongal — Comforting and warm
- Hot tea or filter coffee
Keep it simple and vegetarian. Heavy food will slow you down.
Second Cluster: Temples 7–12 (9:45 AM – 12:15 PM)
The second half of the pilgrimage. Six more temples, same focused rhythm.
- 9:45 AM — Temple 7: Kalkulam Mahadevar Temple — Fresh start after breakfast
- 10:15 AM — Temple 8: Melancode Mahadevar Temple — Steady pace
- 10:45 AM — Temple 9: Thiruvidaicode Mahadevar Temple — Three more to go
- 11:15 AM — Temple 10: Thiruvithamcode Mahadevar Temple — One of the most historically significant temples on the route
- 11:45 AM — Temple 11: Thirupannipagam Mahadevar Temple — Almost there
- 12:15 PM — Temple 12: Thirunattalam Mahadevar Temple — The final temple. Completion.
12:30 PM — Shivalaya Ottam Complete
Twelve temples. One day. One continuous thread of devotion. The sense of completion at the final temple is profound — a quiet joy that comes from discipline, faith, and the physical act of moving through sacred spaces.
Lunch & Rest (1:15 PM)

Alternatively, continue to Kanyakumari (30 km from Nagercoil) for the sunset at India's southernmost tip before returning.
