3 Days is Enough for an Amazing Kerala Trip
Think you need a week to see Kerala? You don't. With the right itinerary and a dedicated cab, 3 days is enough to experience Kerala's two biggest highlights — misty hill stations and backwater houseboats. Or if you prefer beaches, you can do a stunning coastal circuit instead.
The key is picking ONE of these two itineraries, not trying to do everything. Three days means two destinations maximum. Here are the two best options.
Option A: Hills + Houseboat (Most Popular)
Kochi → Munnar → Alleppey → Kochi
This is the most popular 3-day Kerala trip. You get tea-covered hills AND a houseboat cruise — the two experiences everyone associates with Kerala.
Day 1: Kochi Airport → Munnar
- Land at Kochi Airport by 10–11 AM
- Cab picks you up at arrivals
- Drive to Munnar (130 km, 4–5 hrs)
- Stop at Cheeyappara Falls on the way (10 min photo stop)
- Reach Munnar by 3–4 PM
- Evening: Pothamedu Viewpoint for sunset over tea gardens. Walk through Munnar town market — buy fresh tea and chocolate
Stay: 1 night in Munnar
Day 2: Munnar Morning → Alleppey Houseboat
This is the big day — hills in the morning, houseboat by evening.
- 6:30 AM: Leave hotel early
- 7:00 AM: Eravikulam National Park (first slot, 1.5 hours). Spot Nilgiri Tahr on the mountain grasslands
- 9:00 AM: Quick stop at Mattupetty Dam or Echo Point (30 min)
- 10:00 AM: Start driving to Alleppey (170 km, 5 hrs)
- 3:00 PM: Arrive Alleppey. Late houseboat check-in (arrange 3 PM boarding with operator)
- 3:30 PM onwards: Cruise through backwater canals. Fresh Kerala meals onboard. Sunset from the upper deck
- Overnight: Sleep on the houseboat
Important: This day has a long drive. But the Munnar-to-Alleppey route is scenic — you descend from tea gardens through spice country to flat backwater land. Your driver handles everything while you enjoy the views.
Day 3: Houseboat → Kochi Airport
- 7:00 AM: Wake up on the water. Breakfast onboard
- 9:00 AM: Houseboat checkout at jetty
- Cab picks you up → Kochi Airport (85 km, 2 hrs)
- If evening flight: Stop at Fort Kochi (1.5 hrs) — Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, quick cafe stop
- Drop at airport
Total driving: ~385 km over 3 days. Very manageable with a dedicated cab.
Option B: Beaches + Backwaters
Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Trivandrum
For those who prefer beaches over hills. Relaxed pace, no ghat roads, no early morning rushes.
Day 1: Trivandrum Airport → Kovalam
- Land at Trivandrum Airport
- Drive to Kovalam Beach (14 km, 25 min)
- Check into beach hotel
- Afternoon: Lighthouse Beach — swim, sunbathe, walk along the shore
- Evening: Climb the lighthouse for panoramic views. Sunset from the headland
- Dinner: Fresh seafood at a beach restaurant
Optional add-on: If you arrive early, visit Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum city (6 km from airport) before heading to Kovalam.
Day 2: Kovalam Morning → Alleppey Houseboat
- Morning: One last swim or an Ayurvedic massage at a beachside centre (1 hour)
- 10:00 AM: Drive to Alleppey (155 km, 3.5 hrs)
- 1:30 PM: Arrive Alleppey. Houseboat check-in
- Afternoon: Cruise through palm-lined canals. Village life on the banks. Fresh Kerala meals cooked onboard
- Evening: Sunset from the upper deck
- Overnight: Sleep on the houseboat
Day 3: Houseboat → Trivandrum Airport
- 7:00 AM: Breakfast onboard
- 9:00 AM: Houseboat checkout
- Drive to Trivandrum Airport (155 km, 3.5 hrs)
- If evening flight: Stop at Varkala Cliff (45 km from Alleppey) for a 1.5-hour cliff walk and cafe lunch, then continue to airport
Total driving: ~325 km over 3 days.
Which Option to Choose?
- Option A (Hills + Houseboat) if: You want the classic Kerala experience, you enjoy nature and viewpoints, you are okay with one long driving day
- Option B (Beaches + Backwaters) if: You want a relaxed pace, you love beaches, you prefer flat easy drives over ghat roads
Both options include a houseboat overnight — because that is the one Kerala experience you should not miss regardless of trip length.
Can I Add More Destinations in 3 Days?
Honestly, no. Adding Thekkady or Wayanad to a 3-day trip means you spend more time in the car than at destinations. Two destinations in 3 days is the sweet spot.
If you have 4 days, you can add Thekkady between Munnar and Alleppey. If you have 5 days, read our 5-day Kerala itinerary.
Best Time for a 3-Day Trip
- Long weekends — Republic Day, Holi, Good Friday, Independence Day, Onam, Christmas. Add 1 leave day to a 2-day weekend = 3-day Kerala trip
- October–March — Best weather. Book cab and houseboat 1–2 weeks ahead
- April–May — Hot but Munnar is pleasant. Good deals on hotels
- Monsoon — Cheapest rates but rain can disrupt plans. Best for Option B (beaches are dramatic in monsoon)
Tips for a 3-Day Trip
- Morning flights in, evening flights out — Maximizes your time in Kerala
- Pack light — You are moving every day. One backpack or small suitcase is ideal
- Pre-book everything — 3 days means zero room for last-minute scrambling. Book cab, houseboat, and hotel before you arrive
- Tell your driver the plan — Our drivers optimize timing, suggest the best stops, and ensure you do not waste time on wrong turns or bad restaurants
- Don't try to do everything — Two destinations, done well, beats five destinations done in a rush
Vehicle Recommendation
- Couples: Sedan (Swift Dzire) — affordable, comfortable for 2 people
- Family of 4: SUV (Innova Crysta) — more space for kids and luggage, better on Munnar ghat road
- Friends group (5–7): Innova or Tempo Traveller depending on group size
