🚂 Kerala Trip from Chennai — Train, Flight & Cab Itinerary Guide (2025)

Why Kerala is Chennai's Favourite Holiday Destination

Chennai to Kerala is one of the most popular holiday routes in South India. The two states share a border, trains run overnight, flights take just 1 hour, and the drive through the Western Ghats is one of the most scenic in India. Many Chennai families visit Kerala at least once a year — for Onam holidays, Christmas breaks, or summer vacations.

Kerala offers everything Chennai does not — cool hill stations, backwater houseboats, wildlife sanctuaries, and quiet beaches without the Marina crowd. And because distances within Kerala are short (3–5 hours between destinations), you can cover a lot even in a 4–5 day trip.

How to Reach Kerala from Chennai

Train (Most Popular for Families)

Chennai has excellent overnight train connections to Kerala:

  • Chennai to Kochi — 12 hours overnight. Trains: Alleppey Express, Guruvayur Express
  • Chennai to Trivandrum — 16–18 hours. Trains: Trivandrum Mail, Ananthapuri Express
  • Chennai to Alleppey — 14 hours. Direct trains available

Trains are the most popular option for Chennai families — board at night, sleep in AC sleeper, wake up in Kerala. No airport hassle, no luggage limits. Your cab picks you up at the railway station.

Book trains on IRCTC 2–3 weeks ahead, especially during Onam, Christmas, and summer holidays.

Flight

  • Chennai to Kochi — 1 hour, multiple daily flights (IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet)
  • Chennai to Trivandrum — 1.5 hours
  • Chennai to Calicut — 1 hour (fewer flights)

Flights are fast but add airport transfer time at both ends. Best for short trips where you want to maximize time in Kerala.

Drive

  • Chennai to Kochi — 700 km, 11–12 hours via Salem and Coimbatore (NH 44 + NH 544)
  • Chennai to Trivandrum — 770 km, 13–14 hours
  • Chennai to Munnar — 580 km, 10–11 hours via Madurai and Bodimettu

Long drives but some Chennai families prefer it for the flexibility. We offer Chennai to Kochi cab service with experienced highway drivers and overnight travel options.

Tips for Chennai Travellers

Language

Tamil will help more than you think — many Keralites in border areas and tourist towns understand basic Tamil. English works everywhere. Your cab driver will speak English, Hindi, or Tamil.

Food

Kerala food is coconut-heavy and rice-based — different from Chennai's sambar-rasam style but familiar enough. You will love the appam, puttu, Kerala parotta, and fish curry. Vegetarian food is widely available. If you miss Chennai food, North Indian restaurants exist in Munnar and Thekkady tourist areas.

Weather

  • October–March — Best time. Pleasant everywhere. Munnar gets cold at night (10–15°C)
  • April–May — Hot in plains but Munnar is comfortable. Pongal and summer holiday rush
  • June–September — Monsoon. Lush green but heavy rain

Booking Tips

  • Train tickets — Book 2–3 weeks ahead on IRCTC. Tatkal if last minute
  • Onam, Christmas, Pongal — Peak season. Book everything (train, cab, houseboat) at least 2 weeks ahead
  • One-way cab — Don't pay for return if you are taking train/flight back. We offer one-way pricing

Why Book a Cab for the Kerala Portion

Once you reach Kerala (by train, flight, or drive), a dedicated cab with driver is the best way to get around:

  • Station/airport pickup — Driver meets you on arrival
  • Same driver, entire trip — No rebooking at each city
  • Hill road expertise — Munnar and Thekkady ghat roads need experienced drivers
  • Houseboat coordination — Driver drops you at the exact jetty, picks you up after checkout
  • We also arrange houseboats, hotels, and complete trip planning
